Photography tip of the week

There are a few points to remember when including a horizon in your image. Read on...

Firstly, get it straight! There's nothing worse than a crooked horizon in your image.

Secondly, try to remember the rule of thirds and not have the horizon cutting your image in half. Position the horizon in the upper half to accentuate the foreground or alternatively, positioning your horizon in the bottom half of your image will accentuate the vastness of the sky and/or beauty of the clouds. The 3 images on the left illustrate this.

And lastly, when taking images of people, avoid positioning the horizon right behind their heads - it can be distracting and just makes for a nicer image. Adjust yourself so you are shooting from above so that ground is behind them, or squat down slightly so sky is behind them.
