Tips for photographing Halloween

Its that time of year again, Goblins, Ghouls and Ghost emerge from the shadows expecting treats at your door - or beware! Fairy princesses and witches prance along the sidewalks swinging their brooms and baskets - often more excited about the dress-ups than the lollies.

Its an awesome opportunity to take some cute snaps of the kids - after all, you went to such an effort to dress them up!
Here are some tips on how to get the winning shots -

1- Get the clean posed portraits done first and early. Before too long your cuties will turn into messies with chocolate and goo all over them - not to mention the crazy behaviour that ensues after the sugar starts to take effect!
2 - Shoot from down low - get down to the kids level, or even lower if you want them to appear big and scary from above.
3 -  Increase your ISO if you're shooting on a DSLR. This will eliminate the flash going off when the sky darkens and limit motion blur as the shutter will need to stay open for longer. Alternately, try to take your shots in doorways where there is a porch light or with a torch lighting up their face.
4 - Interact with the kids, get crazy. Ask them to get into character for the whole effect.
5 - Capture the details, up close. The pointy shoes, the makeup (or chocolate) on the face, the glitter on the wings, it all creates a sense of being there and tells the whole story.
6 -  Get shots of them walking along the path, or knocking on the door from low down and far away. This will create some lovely leading lines up to the main subject and get in the whole enviroment and other children too.
8 - Don't forget to put the camera down and have fun!

This year I don't actually have an image to post because I did just that. I left my camera at home and just enjoyed watching them for once! A rare occurrence indeed...
